An 11-year-old boy in Ontario reportedly took an envelope containing money his family had saved for emergencies and secretly spent C$2,000 on Roblox gift cards at Walmart.
The incident happened while the boy was staying with his grandmother, who was unaware that he had taken the money. Walmart has a C$1,000 limit for a single gift card transaction, so the boy simply made two separate purchases of C$1,000 each.
The family discovered the missing money later and returned to Walmart with the gift cards and receipts in hopes of getting a refund. However, the store told them that the purchases were final sale and could not be refunded.
Walmart said its employees had followed the store’s C$1,000 gift card transaction limit. The company also noted that Walmart Canada does not impose an age restriction on gift card purchases.
The incident has sparked a discussion about parental supervision, large gift card transactions and whether retailers should introduce additional safeguards when children attempt to spend thousands of dollars in cash on gaming cards.
