A non-canon antihero played by Peter Sarsgaard will appear in The Last of Us Season 3

HBO is preparing significant changes for the third — and potentially final — season of its adaptation of The Last of Us. Joining the cast is Peter Sarsgaard, best known for his role in The Batman, who will portray an important character not featured in the original games developed by Naughty Dog.

According to Deadline, Sarsgaard will play Amon, one of the leaders of the Seraphites. The religious cult is a key part of Abby Anderson’s storyline, which is expected to be the primary focus of the new season. The Seraphites are known for following the teachings of their deceased prophet, rejecting modern technology entirely, and displaying extreme brutality in their conflicts with enemies.

Changes have also been made behind the scenes. Craig Mazin will serve as the sole showrunner for Season 3. Meanwhile, Neil Druckmann, who co-led production of the first two seasons alongside Mazin, will not be involved this time.

The production, currently taking place in Vancouver, has been paused for a month due to the start of the FIFA World Cup activities in Canada. Filming is expected to resume in July and continue through the end of the year.

The third season of The Last of Us is scheduled for release in 2027.
