A university in the Philippines has announced a seminar to analyze the gacha game Umamusume: Pretty Derby

In the Philippines, one of the country’s prestigious universities has announced an unusual scientific seminar scheduled for May 21, titled “Biology of Umamusume: A Discussion on the Biology of Anthropomorphic Horses.” The event will focus on analyzing the gacha game Umamusume: Pretty Derby, where characters combine human traits with features of racehorses. Participants will discuss how accurately the characters’ designs reflect real horse physiology — including body structure, endurance, and behavioral traits adapted into an anime format.

This is not the university’s first experiment of this kind: it has previously hosted seminars at the intersection of science and pop culture, including “The Biology of Pandora” inspired by Avatar, an analysis of fungi in The Last of Us, as well as more unconventional topics such as the “Nihilist Penguin” meme and “The Anatomy of Cars.” This approach helps attract a broader audience to science by combining academic knowledge with popular cultural phenomena.
