The new project led by Cory Barlog was not shown during February’s State of Play presentation. However, two well known insiders claim that an official announcement is planned for the summer, with a potential release window set for 2027.
Insider NatetheHate wrote on X that Barlog is currently working on his own project that has yet to be revealed to the public. According to him, more details will be shared later, while the first showcase is expected this summer. If development proceeds without major delays, the game could launch as early as 2027.
This information was indirectly supported by Shinobi602 on the ResetEra forums. Responding to speculation that the game might only arrive in 2028, he said the timeline is not that far off. In his view, the reveal could take place either in May at another State of Play or during the summer as part of Summer Game Fest. If no presentation happens within that window, the studio may delay the release or opt for a smaller scale marketing push closer to launch.
Back in 2021, Barlog confirmed he would not direct God of War Ragnarök, handing over leadership to Eric Williams. He remained involved as creative director and producer while shifting his focus to a new, still secret project. Rumors have also suggested a possible science fiction setting.
The most credible report came from Jason Schreier, published by Bloomberg in the summer of 2025. He stated that development was progressing well and that while the game is not technically a brand new intellectual property, it may feel like one to players.
