On October 1, 1999, Arkane Studios was founded in Lyon, France — a team that would eventually become one of the most recognizable studios in the immersive sim genre. The studio was founded by game designer Raphaël Colantonio, who wanted to create not just games built around missions, but complete worlds where players could freely discover their own ways to interact with the environment.
The Dream of a New Ultima Underworld
When Arkane was founded, Colantonio was heavily inspired by Ultima Underworld and System Shock. His original ambition was to create a sequel to Ultima Underworld, but the rights holders did not approve the project.
The team then decided to take a different approach and create its own game based on a similar philosophy. This led to Arx Fatalis, released in 2002. The game received positive reviews from critics and became the first major milestone in Arkane’s history.
From a Small Team to an International Studio
In 2006, Arkane opened a second studio in Austin, Texas. There, Colantonio met Harvey Smith, a designer known for his work on Deus Ex. Their approach to game design proved to be very similar, and the two eventually worked together on Arkane’s biggest projects.
In 2010, Arkane joined ZeniMax Media, giving the studio the opportunity to work on larger-scale projects. Colantonio later noted that this period allowed Arkane to create the biggest games in its history.
Dishonored — The Breakthrough
Arkane’s major breakthrough came in 2012 with the release of Dishonored. The game combined stealth, action and freedom of choice, allowing players to approach many situations in completely different ways.
The success of Dishonored established Arkane as one of the most prominent studios in the immersive sim genre. The team later created Dishonored 2 and worked on several other major projects.
Prey, Deathloop and New Experiments
In 2017, Arkane released Prey — a sci-fi immersive sim set aboard the Talos I space station. The game focused on exploration, experimentation with gameplay systems and freedom of approach.
The studio’s next major project was DEATHLOOP, released in 2021. The game introduced a time-loop concept in which players gradually learned about the world and used that knowledge to change their subsequent runs.
Arkane Today
Today, Arkane operates through two main studios — Arkane Lyon in France and Arkane Austin in the United States. The studio continues to follow its signature approach: creating detailed worlds that give players the freedom to experiment and find their own solutions.
One of Arkane Lyon’s current projects is Marvel’s Blade — a single-player third-person game based on Marvel’s character Blade, set in Paris. The project was unveiled in 2023.
Over more than a quarter of a century, Arkane has gone from a small French team dreaming of creating an Ultima Underworld sequel to a studio known for its distinctive style and approach to video game design.
