Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, scheduled for release on Friday, October 23, 2026, will not be available on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on day one. To access the project at launch, players will have to purchase the full version of the game.
The decision to skip a day-one release on Game Pass is driven by financial factors. Over the past year, Microsoft suffered millions of dollars in lost revenue due to weak sales of Black Ops 7. Because the game underperformed, a significant portion of players did not renew their subscriptions, which negatively impacted the performance of the entire service. Omitting MW4 from the subscription at launch is intended to stabilize sales for the new entry and balance the financial statements for both Activision and Microsoft.
At the same time, Activision confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will eventually join the Xbox Game Pass catalog in 2027, with release expected in late summer or early fall. This shift in strategy comes amid ongoing changes to Game Pass itself, where subscription terms continue to be adjusted following price increases in early 2026.
