Capcom's free demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched last week on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, attracting more than one million downloads. While many players enjoyed the preview, some criticized its low difficulty, particularly because regular enemies could be defeated with only a few sword strikes.
Producer Akihito Kadowaki addressed the feedback in a video message, explaining that the demo was intentionally designed to be more accessible. According to him, the protagonist was equipped with abilities that normally become available much later in the game.
«We've heard the feedback that the demo felt too easy for some people. First, the demo is just a slice of the early part of the story. Also, we really wanted you to enjoy a variety of Musashi's actions, so we intentionally equipped him with some late-game skills. Because of that, some players might have felt a lack of challenge», —Kadowaki said.
He reassured players that the final release will offer a tougher experience, with both bosses and regular Genma enemies putting up a much stronger fight.
«Rest assured, in the final game, the bosses and the regular Genma will put up a tougher fight. Please look forward to the challenge in the full game», — he added.
Many action game fans have recently expressed concerns about a wider industry trend toward lower difficulty levels. Modern titles often feature deep combat systems and powerful player abilities, but enemy aggression and durability are sometimes reduced, making those mechanics less important during normal gameplay.
Capcom has already faced similar criticism with Monster Hunter Wilds, which became more challenging through post-launch updates. As a result, many players hope that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will deliver a more demanding combat experience and avoid the growing trend of overly simplified action games.
