Following Xbox's major restructuring, Compulsion Games has officially confirmed that it will become an independent studio once again. As part of the transition, the developer will retain ownership of Contrast, We Happy Few, and the award-winning South of Midnight.
In its statement, the studio thanked Xbox for years of support and collaboration.
«Today, we're sharing that Compulsion Games will return to independent management following our time as part of Xbox. As part of this transition, we will retain the rights to Contrast, We Happy Few, and our award-winning South of Midnight. We're grateful for the years we spent with Xbox, for the support they provided our team, and for the opportunity to bring these games to players around the world. As an independent studio, we're excited to continue building the distinctive games that define Compulsion while taking the next steps in our journey».
As previously reported, Microsoft is cutting around 20 percent of its Xbox workforce as part of a major restructuring. Compulsion Games and Double Fine have regained their independence, while the future of Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Arkane Studios has yet to be officially confirmed.
According to multiple reports, Compulsion Games intends to support its teams throughout the transition. However, potential layoffs remain possible since the studio will no longer receive financial backing from Microsoft.
