Developers of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reveal they built the game with almost no code

At the Game Developers Conference, the team from Sandfall Interactive explained that during the development of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 they rarely wrote gameplay code in C++. Instead, they used Unreal Engine 5’s visual scripting system, Blueprints, to implement virtually all gameplay systems.

Slides shown during the talk indicated that the team used Blueprints for all gameplay systems, choosing to take full advantage of the engine’s native tools rather than traditional programming.

Developers also noted that only a few programmers worked on the project and that even combat mechanics were created using UE’s built‑in tools, including Sequencer.
