On August 20, the playoffs of the Esports World Cup 2026 in Counter-Strike 2 continue. Following the four series that took place yesterday, today four more quarterfinalists will be decided, and in the evening, the tournament's first quarterfinal will kick off.
As a reminder, the EWC playoffs follow a single-elimination system: one loss and the team leaves the tournament. All matches up to the grand final are played in a BO3 format. The tournament prize pool is $2 million.
For Ukrainian fans, today is especially important: NAVI and B8 enter the fray, while G2 featuring Ukrainian player r1nkle will play in the quarterfinal.
14:00 — NAVI : Legacy
NAVI and Brazilian squad Legacy will be the first to enter the server today. On paper, NAVI are the favorites — the team holds sixth place in the world rankings, while Legacy is in eighth.
However, head-to-head history shows that for NAVI, this opponent is far from simple.
The teams have already met three times in 2026. In June at the IEM Cologne Major, NAVI confidently defeated Legacy 2-0, but a month earlier, the Brazilians pulled off a shock victory at IEM Atlanta, beating NAVI 2-1. The overall head-to-head map record according to HLTV is 4-3 in favor of Legacy, taking into account the mentioned matches.
So today NAVI will have the opportunity not only to advance to the EWC quarterfinals, but also to permanently solidify an advantage over a tricky opponent.
Particular attention should be paid to the Ukrainians on NAVI's roster — b1t and w0nderful. Both already have experience beating Legacy this year.
14:00 — Falcons : The MongolZ
Running concurrently is another highly interesting series. Falcons enter the match as one of the main favorites of the EWC, while The MongolZ are defending their title as champions of last year's Esports World Cup.
Their head-to-head history almost perfectly illustrates the evenness of this matchup. The teams have met five times: Falcons won three times, and The MongolZ twice. The overall map score is 7-6 in favor of Falcons.
The last encounter took place in May at PGL Astana. Falcons won 2-1 back then, taking Dust2 and Mirage, while The MongolZ responded with a victory on Inferno.
Interestingly, before that, The MongolZ had defeated Falcons twice in a row at IEM Cologne 2025. Thus, today's series will become another chapter in their intense rivalry.
16:55 — FaZe : Vitality
One of the central matches of the Round of 16 will be the clash between FaZe and Vitality.
These teams have a rich head-to-head history. According to HLTV data, in BO3/BO1 matches, their rivalry spans 10 series, in which Vitality hold a 7-4 advantage in series wins taking overtimes into statistical account.
The last meeting took place in May at IEM Atlanta — Vitality won 2-0, taking Nuke 16-14 and Dust2 13-5.
However, the current FaZe is a completely different team. The roster is in good form and has already overcome Legacy at the EWC. Vitality also demonstrate stable gameplay, but in Paris they have already suffered a loss to B8 during the group stage.
Therefore, more than just a quarterfinal spot is at stake — it is an opportunity for one of the tournament's top teams to continue their path toward the title.
16:55 — B8 : Spirit
For Ukrainian fans, the main event of the second half of the day will be B8 versus Spirit.
The Ukrainian team has repeatedly proven capable of beating favorites, and now they face one of the toughest possible opponents.
Head-to-head history is currently in Spirit's favor. The teams have met twice, with Spirit claiming victory both times. The last encounter occurred in March at ESL Pro League Season 23: B8 won Mirage 13-4, but lost Anubis 7-13 and Nuke 9-13, dropping the series 1-2.
Now B8 have earned a chance to rewrite that history on the grand stage of the EWC.
Furthermore, B8's entire roster is Ukrainian: npl, s1zzi, kensizor, esenthial, and alex666.
If B8 manage to knock out Spirit, it will be one of the biggest upsets of the current playoffs.
19:50 — G2 : FURIA
And in the evening, the first quarterfinal of EWC 2026 will begin. G2 and FURIA will enter the server.
G2 have already passed a tough test in the Round of 16, defeating Astralis 2-1 after a loss on Ancient. FURIA, for their part, pulled off an incredible comeback against Aurora — the Brazilians won the series 2-1, rallying back on Mirage from a 3-9 deficit by winning ten consecutive rounds.
Now these teams will meet in a battle for a spot in the top 4.
The rivalry history here is very rich. According to available statistics, G2 and FURIA have played 22 head-to-head matches: G2 won 12 times, FURIA 10. The map record advantage is also minimal — 23-22 in favor of G2.
At the same time, recent encounters demonstrate just how dangerous FURIA is for G2.
Special attention goes to r1nkle. The Ukrainian delivered a stellar series against Astralis, becoming the highest-rated player of the match with a 1.31 rating, and will now have the chance to help G2 break through to the semifinals.
Thus, today EWC 2026 will deliver four Round of 16 matches and the first quarterfinal all at once.
- 14:00 — NAVI 🆚 Legacy
- 14:00 — Falcons 🆚 The MongolZ
- 16:55 — FaZe 🆚 Vitality
- 16:55 — B8 🆚 Spirit
- 19:50 — G2 🆚 FURIA — quarterfinal
For Ukrainian fans, this could become one of the most important days of the tournament: NAVI and B8 will fight for a spot in the top 8, while r1nkle together with G2 will attempt to take a step toward the semifinals.
Head-to-head history shows that there will be no easy matches today. But it is precisely in such series that the biggest EWC upsets are born.
