Falcom announces new Dragon Slayer game for its 45th anniversary

Nihon Falcom has officially confirmed that a new entry in the Dragon Slayer series is currently in development. The project is being created to celebrate the studio’s 45th anniversary and is currently known as Dragon Slayer Project.

So far, the only confirmed detail is that the game is being developed for consoles. The genre, exact platforms, and release window have not yet been revealed.
During the announcement, the developers also revisited the history of the Dragon Slayer franchise. The original game debuted in 1984 for the NEC PC‑8801 computer and was described as a «new-type, real-type role-playing game».

The first Dragon Slayer game launched for PC-8801 in 1984 as a “new-type, real-type role-playing game. The title attracted significant attention at the time thanks to its unusual mechanics. Players could attack enemies simply by bumping into them, return home with experience points and items to strengthen their character, and solve puzzles using specific items and magic. These features helped the game earn recognition among early PC users as a standout action RPG.

Over time, several other titles became part of the franchise, including Xanadu, Romancia, Legacy of the Wizard, and Sorcerian.

The sixth installment, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, introduced a command-based battle system and placed a stronger focus on characters, world building, and storytelling. That entry eventually led to the spin-off franchise The Legend of Heroes, which later evolved into the story-driven RPG series Trails, beginning with The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.d of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.
