Warner Bros. has officially announced the start of production on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and released the first behind the scenes footage featuring Andy Serkis returning as Gollum.
In the short video, Serkis is seen looking through the script before asking a production assistant, "What are we gonna start with?" He then replies, "That's a very good place to start," puts on his motion capture suit, and recreates the iconic posture and expression of the beloved character.
Production is currently taking place in New Zealand, with the teaser ending on sweeping aerial shots of the country's mountain landscapes.
Andy Serkis is not only reprising his role as Sméagol but also directing the film. He is joined by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, while the cast includes Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Lee Pace, Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, Leo Woodall, and Anya Taylor Joy.
Speaking about returning to Middle earth, Serkis recently said: "It couldn't be better. I adore these people and have spent so many years working with them. Almost the entire crew has come back after 25 years, and now a new generation of their children is part of it too. It's a real family affair."
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to premiere on December 17, 2027.
