The French government has officially introduced a nationwide ban on betting on esports competitions. The decision was adopted at the national level as part of broader efforts to regulate the gambling market and protect consumers. As a result, all online platforms offering esports betting services within the country are now considered illegal.
According to the government, the primary objective of the legislation is to protect young people, who are considered the most vulnerable group to the risks associated with gambling. Lawmakers highlighted two key reasons behind the ban:
- Preventing early gambling addiction: Since esports has a particularly strong appeal among younger audiences, including minors, authorities cited evidence showing that the earlier a person is exposed to gambling, the greater the risk of developing long-term addiction.
- Reducing social harm: The legislation also aims to protect young people from the broader consequences of gambling addiction, including social isolation, damaged family relationships, and severe financial difficulties.
Previously, production officially began on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with the film scheduled to premiere on December 17, 2027.
