New details from the legal dispute between Elon Musk and OpenAI have revealed an unexpected role played by Valve’s head, Gabe Newell, in the early development of the company behind ChatGPT. According to disclosed documents, in 2018 Newell was one of the organization’s most dedicated and financially generous supporters.
Newell donated $20 million to OpenAI in 2018. At the time, OpenAI still positioned itself as a non-profit organization focused on the safe development of artificial intelligence. He not only provided funding but also held a unique role — he was the sole member of an “informal advisory board.”
Emails released as part of the lawsuit indicate that Newell was “enthusiastic” about OpenAI’s potential. He believed that AI research had a significant future.
