Reddit user u/ssuberlex bought a gamepad on OfferUp for $200 without realizing that the device was actually a prototype of the unannounced Xbox Elite Series 3.
The buyer apparently had not been following the previous leaks. Back in May, reports revealed that Microsoft was working on two new controllers, with one of them expected to be the Elite 3. The photos shared by u/ssuberlex closely match the previously leaked images, while a “Not for Sale” marking found on one of the internal components provides further evidence that the device is a prototype.
The most interesting discovery is a tiny built in screen located between the triggers. Its exact purpose remains unknown, but it could potentially display information such as the battery status or the current operating mode. A button can also be seen next to the screen, which may be used to switch between different connection modes.
Previous leaks suggested that the Xbox Elite 3 would feature Wi Fi 6, Bluetooth, a 3.5mm jack, an interchangeable D pad, paddles and trigger locks. The controller is also expected to include two scroll wheels and a new Pair button that could switch between a local console connection and Xbox Cloud Gaming to reduce latency.
The new photos also confirm several design details. Instead of replaceable batteries, the controller will reportedly use a built in rechargeable battery. For improved repairability, Microsoft appears to have included a QR code directing users to a repair website, while the casing uses Torx T6 screws.
Unfortunately, the prototype does not appear to work. According to its buyer, it does not pair with an Xbox nor with a cable. Just the red light blinking but doesn’t do any thing wired or wireless.
One Reddit user suggested that the device could be a development kit encrypted to work only with a registered Xbox developer account. The original u/ssuberlex post was soon deleted, further fueling speculation that the prototype is genuine.
Microsoft has yet to officially announce the Xbox Elite Series 3. The controller is reportedly expected to launch by the end of 2026, with an official reveal potentially coming in the near future.
