Gen.G sweeps LYON 3-0 to advance to Worlds 2026 semifinals

In the 2026 League of Legends World Championship quarterfinals held in Allen, Texas, the South Korean team Gen.G secured a convincing 3-0 victory over LYON. This performance eliminated North America's last representative in the tournament and unambiguously guaranteed Gen.G a spot in the semifinals.

Gen.G's key strategy throughout the series was the constant suppression of LYON's top laner, Niship "Dhokla" Doshi. In the first game, Kim "Canyon" Geon-bu (Qiyana) quickly built a gold advantage over his counterpart, Inspired. Meanwhile, Kim "Kiin" Gi-in (Olaf) completely shut down Dhokla in the top lane. LYON tried to turn the tide in the fight for the first dragon, but Canyon cold-bloodedly stole the objective. Reaching critical mass, Kiin turned into a veritable ticking time bomb—in crucial team fights, he simply obliterated the opponents' marksman, Berserker, neutralizing LYON's early success in the bot lane. Despite the Mexican organization's desperate resistance, Gen.G confidently brought the first map to a victory.

On the second map, the Mexican organization tried to surprise its opponents with an unconventional draft. The duo of Berserker and Isles selected the combination of Mel and Pyke for the first time in the tournament to counter Ashe and Seraphine. However, Park "Ruler" Jae-hyuk ruined their plans with perfect positioning on Ashe. Despite LYON's attempts to stall the game through objectives and flanking maneuvers, the constant pressure from Sion, Jarvan IV, and Ashe allowed Gen.G to win the decisive team fight and push their opponent to the brink of elimination.

In the third game, LYON used their final trump card—a surprise Gangplank pick, appearing at Worlds for the first time since 2022. The Korean squad continued playing their proven strategy, mercilessly punishing the opponents' top laner. Although LYON stayed in the game by stacking dragons, the battle for the Dragon Soul proved fatal. A lightning-fast engage by Joo "Duro" Min-kyu on Rakan shattered the North American team's positioning, allowing Gen.G to secure a perfect ace in the mid lane and close out the series.

In the semifinals this Saturday, Gen.G will face the Chinese squad Invictus Gaming (IG). This will be a rematch of their clash in the first round of the Swiss stage, where the LCK champions emerged victorious. For Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon, this matchup will mean a test against three former World Champions on IG's roster—TheShy, Rookie, and Meiko. The winner will earn a ticket to New York City for the finals at the Barclays Center, where they will compete for the Summoner's Cup.
