God of War Creator David Jaffe Criticizes “God of War Laufey” Reveal

During the PlayStation State of Play presentation, Sony Santa Monica showcased around 20 minutes of gameplay and revealed major story details for the new entry in the franchise, God of War Laufey.

The game takes place after the death of Kratos’ wife, Faye, who awakens in an afterlife realm known as “Everywhen,” where gods from different mythologies compete for dominance.

Early fan reactions have been mixed, but original series creator David Jaffe has publicly criticized the project during a livestream. Jaffe described the upcoming game as “colorless” and “boring,” suggesting that the footage shown represents only the opening of the story. He also argued that the project is likely destined to underperform commercially and will fail to meet Sony’s sales expectations.

Jaffe explained his skepticism by claiming that the franchise’s formula has exhausted its momentum. According to him, the early God of War (series) titles were defined by brutality, Greek mythology, and Kratos’ charisma. While Cory Barlog’s 2018 reboot was a success, he believes the follow-up God of War Ragnarök already felt strained.

In his view, the new setting and protagonist in God of War Laufey lose connection with the franchise’s traditional identity.

As a reminder, Until Dawn 2 has been officially announced and is scheduled for release in 2027.
