Despite Sony's decision to stop releasing physical editions of its games starting in 2028, the company has confirmed that God of War: Laufey will receive a boxed edition. The confirmation followed PlayStation's announcement that it will attend San Diego Comic-Con, taking place from July 23 to July 26.
During the event, Sony will showcase several major titles, including MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Marvel's Wolverine, and God of War: Laufey.
After Santa Monica Studio reshared Sony's announcement on social media, fans asked several questions about the upcoming game. In one of its replies, the studio confirmed that the adventure centered on Kratos' wife will be available in physical format. This effectively confirms that God of War: Laufey will launch before January 2028, when Sony's controversial decision to discontinue physical releases comes into effect.
Recently, respected journalist Jason Schreier claimed that God of War: Laufey is targeting a February or March 2027 release, adding that the official release date announcement is coming "very soon."
The PlayStation 5 exclusive will offer a fresh and already controversial take on the God of War universe. Its story will unfold alongside the events of God of War (2018), with Faye taking the leading role.
During her journey, Faye will venture into an afterlife reserved for divine beings, where she will encounter criminals connected not only to Norse mythology but also to other civilizations, including Asian and Ancient Egyptian cultures.
Her ultimate goal is to restore the original fate of Kratos and Atreus, ensuring that an ancient prophecy comes true. Like Kratos, Faye is a skilled warrior with magical abilities, and throughout the adventure she will fight alongside allies, including both brand new characters and familiar faces from previous games.
