The massive GTA VI showcase has triggered a sudden surge in demand for the PlayStation 5 Pro in the United States. Sony’s high-end console has rapidly disappeared from major retailers following the extended look at Rockstar’s upcoming game, while third-party sellers are taking advantage of the shortage.
Best Buy and Target have completely run out of PS5 Pro stock. Amazon and Walmart still list the console, but only through third-party sellers charging as much as $1,300. Recent eBay sales have also seen new PS5 Pro bundles go for around $1,200.
At the time of writing, PlayStation Direct remains the main US retailer where the PS5 Pro can still be purchased for its $899 recommended price. However, those supplies are also disappearing quickly. The extent of the shortage in other regions is unclear, although gamers are increasingly reporting difficulties finding both the PS5 Pro and the standard PS5.
The sudden spike in demand appears to be driven by players wanting the best possible visual experience for Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated title. Sony has also been promoting the idea that GTA VI is best played on PS5, adding further momentum to console sales.
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA VI will include enhancements for the PS5 Pro, although the exact graphical improvements and available modes have not yet been revealed. Technical analysts, meanwhile, remain skeptical that the game will reach 60 FPS even on Sony’s more powerful console.
According to Digital Foundry’s analysis, the base PS5 version runs at 1440p and 30 FPS without upscaling.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
