After the massive success of Baldur’s Gate III, Hasbro became interested in developing a fourth entry in the series, but finding a studio capable of taking on such a large project proved difficult.
After Larian Studios declined to continue working on Baldur’s Gate 4, Hasbro reached out to veterans of the series, including former Baldur’s Gate 2 lead designers James Ohlen and Kevin Martens. However, they also chose not to take on the project.
James Ohlen, head of Archetype Entertainment, explained that Hasbro CEO Chris Cox contacted him after it became clear Larian would not proceed with a sequel.
Ohlen himself outlined the reasons for his refusal in a series of comments:
«On the day Chris Cox, Hasbro CEO, found out they weren’t going to do it, he called me. ‘Hey James, what do you think about doing Baldur’s Gate 4?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t, I would fail, and here’s why I would fail»
He also emphasized how difficult it would be to compete with Baldur’s Gate III:
«I wouldn’t want to compete against that. Doing Exodus is hard enough, but having to compete against Baldur’s Gate 3? That would be insanity»
According to the developer, the scale of the project makes it nearly impossible for a new team to take on:
«We’re talking about at least half a decade of horror, building all that stuff from scratch»
He also noted that Larian’s technological foundation was a key factor in the game’s success:
«Swen’s always going to be the master of building those kinds of things. It’s really hard to take him off that throne because of everything: the tools, institutional knowledge, team»
Comparing approaches to game development, Ohlen reflected on his experience working on the original series:
«When I worked on Baldur’s Gate, I was like, ‘Everyone else sucks and we’re going to crush it.’ It was us against all the other game studios, we were going to outdo them. And because none of us had built games before, we were all like, ‘We’re going to do everything differently.’ And sometimes you need that»
The fate of Baldur’s Gate 4 remains unknown. Meanwhile, sources claim that a remaster of Baldur’s Gate 2, and possibly the original game, is currently in development.
