CD Projekt RED recently celebrated the 19th anniversary of the original The Witcher game. To mark the occasion, the Polish studio posted a heartfelt tribute to the legendary BioWare, acknowledging the critical role the Canadian developer played in bringing Geralt of Rivia's first adventure to life.
How BioWare Helped Shape the Original Witcher
In the early days of CD Projekt RED, adapting Andrzej Sapkowski's dark fantasy world into an action RPG was a massive undertaking for a young studio. BioWare stepped in to support the Polish developers by:
- licensing their proprietary Aurora Engine;
- sharing technical knowledge and RPG development expertise;
- granting CD Projekt RED space at BioWare's official E3 booth to show off the game to the press and public.
This crucial support turned CD Projekt RED's ambitious vision into Geralt's debut interactive journey, paving the way for one of gaming's most celebrated franchises.
Diverging paths of two RPG Titans today, the trajectories of both studios could not be more different. Founded in 1995, BioWare became a titan of the genre with legendary RPGs such as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age, before Electronic Arts recently decided to shut down the studio.
Meanwhile, CD Projekt RED grew into one of the world's premier AAA developers. Following the success of the original Witcher, the studio created two acclaimed sequels, the massive hit The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and the sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077.
