Konami has once again sparked debate with an unusual release strategy. In partnership with Limited Run Games, the publisher has announced a physical Deluxe Edition of Silent Hill: The Short Message for PlayStation 5, despite the game being available as a free download since its 2024 launch.
The announcement comes as Sony faces criticism over its gradual move away from physical game releases. Priced at $70, the collector's edition includes the game on disc along with a poster, a postcard set, an acrylic keychain, and a numbered certificate of authenticity.
The reveal quickly fueled discussions across social media and gaming forums. Limited Run Games founder Josh Fairhurst joined the conversation, explaining that he personally approved the physical release. According to him, the project is not intended to generate profit but to preserve the game in case it is ever removed from the PlayStation Store, where it could otherwise disappear permanently.
Fairhurst also pointed to the case of the iconic horror title P.T., the playable teaser for Hideo Kojima's canceled Silent Hills project.
Pre-orders for the physical edition of Silent Hill: The Short Message will be available from July 10 through August 9.
