LEC Commissioner Artem Bykov has outlined key strategies for the European League of Legends championship in 2027, discussing the future of road trips, tournament formats, penalty policies, and officially dismissing rumors of an online transition ahead of the lower bracket final in Nice.
While hosting live road trips will remain a core strategic direction and scale steadily, the league will not expand them drastically in 2027. Bykov noted that most organizations currently lack the necessary event-hosting experience, which is primarily held by Karmine Corp and Movistar KOI. However, the overarching five-year goal is for all teams to host such events, which will mainly be scheduled during the regular season to prevent clubs from missing their own events due to early playoff exits.
Despite community speculation about a partial move online, the LEC maintains its strict commitment to the Berlin Arena. Bykov firmly rejected the idea of an online transition. While remote matches were briefly considered as a budget-saving measure, the league opted for alternative solutions: constructing a second stage to run VCT and LEC simultaneously and restricting studio audiences to weekends only.
The league is also sticking to the three-split format and scrapping LEC Versus for the upcoming year. Management argues that the three-split structure offers better narrative pacing for the European audience, allows struggling teams a fresh start, and maximizes the number of matches, ruling out a single-season model with a preliminary cup like the Korean LCK. Conversely, despite being one of the most-watched events in the league's history, the LEC Versus format was strictly a proof-of-concept project and will not return, allowing the LEC to refocus entirely on its ten permanent partnered organizations.
When it came to adjusting the fine policy, Bykov acknowledged that the league was caught off guard by its own rapid growth, particularly regarding intense fanbase rivalries and influencer-owned organizations. Following community backlash over a string of controversial fines, the LEC softened its code of conduct starting in the Summer Split, accepting that trash-talking is an essential part of the entertainment product, provided it does not compromise a safe environment.
Reflecting on the region's international ambitions, Bykov emphasized the progress made this year: in 2026, LEC teams won more series against Asian rosters than in the past five years combined. He attributes this spike to the infrastructural improvements by top clubs (G2, KC, MKOI), an influx of hungry new talent, and the added pressure of playing more BO3 series on stage. Moving forward, the LEC's primary objective is to solidify European teams as legitimate, consistent title contenders at international events rather than perennial underdogs.
