The cult-classic prequel to Fallout: New Vegas has officially launched on the GOG platform as a one-click install mod. This release is part of the platform's video game preservation initiative and will provide fans with high-quality content while they wait for the next official games in the series.
Fallout: New California is considered one of the most ambitious and highly rated fan projects. Its development history spans years: the first part was released in 2013, and the second and final installment (although three were originally planned) came out in 2018.
The game takes place in a brand-new region of the California wasteland. Players begin their journey as a completely new character in Vault 18 and dive into an original story.
Key features of the mod include:
- Full voice acting for dialogues;
- A dynamic radio station;
- Eight new companions to accompany the player;
- Confrontations and interactions with classic factions: the NCR, the Enclave, raiders, and super mutants.
The mod's release on GOG comes amidst the overall active development of the Fallout franchise. Recently, Bethesda Game Studios revealed its roadmap for the series, which includes remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, new expansions for Fallout 76 and Fallout Shelter, and the upcoming release of Fallout 5 (which will likely not arrive until 2035).
Outside the gaming industry, the universe is also expanding rapidly: filming for the third season of the Prime Video Fallout series is currently underway, and a new reality show based on Fallout Shelter is in production. However, until these new releases arrive, Fallout: New California serves as an excellent way for players to spend time in their favorite post-apocalyptic world.
