Yesterday, September 10, 2026, the football simulator GOALS received its biggest update since its June release — GOALS 2.0. The developers focused on a global overhaul of the gameplay, adding new tournaments, and improving overall stability for players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The biggest innovations affected gameplay and artificial intelligence. The passing system has undergone significant changes: passes have become more predictable, responsive, and skill-based. Crossing, trapping, and first-touch animations have been improved, while the effectiveness of lofted passes has been reduced with a higher and slower trajectory. Defending now requires better reading of the game and positioning, and the new Manual Switch Override option prioritizes switching to the pressing player. AI behavior has also become more effective during attacking runs, defensive organization, and set pieces.
In addition to updating mechanics, the developers have expanded the selection of game modes. For solo play fans, The Trial has been added — a tournament where the player controls a single footballer alongside four AI teammates. It consists of six 5v5 matches against the computer with progressively increasing difficulty, allowing players to earn in-game rewards.
At the same time, the base 5v5 team format received a full competitive version — 5v5 Ranked. In this mode, five real players compete together, controlling only their own characters. The mode features unique match intros and a dedicated hub with 3D player models.
An important addition is the Swaps 2.0 feature, which allows players to merge footballers in their club (both Originals and Retired players) to obtain higher-tier cards. For newcomers, a structured Onboarding hub and interactive tutorials have been developed, covering all basic mechanics: from movement and sprinting to tackling and shooting.
Visual and technical improvements complete this massive patch. New stadiums have been added to the game, along with a completely overhauled 3D front-end, as well as optimized stability for older CPUs and handheld PCs.
