The developers of Meccha Chameleon have addressed reports of malware being distributed through Steam Workshop. According to the team, an unofficial custom map contained hidden code capable of executing external processes on players' PCs. The payload downloaded additional malware, potentially allowing attackers to steal passwords, access personal files, or install a remote access tool.
The vulnerability was patched on the same day it was reported. An analysis of the updated game build found no evidence that the official game files had been compromised.
In a separate incident, the project's Discord server was compromised after an administrator account was taken over. The attackers posted false messages claiming that the game's official update contained malware. The developers stated that these announcements were fake and intended to damage the game's reputation.
The team advises players to avoid untrusted Steam Workshop maps, stay away from suspicious links, and ignore fake Discord announcements. They also confirmed that the official game files are safe.
