Michael Bay Could Return to Transformers as Steven Spielberg Takes Creative Lead on New Film — Reports

Following the completion of the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger, the newly formed Skydance is moving forward with plans to revive some of its biggest franchises. One of the studio’s priorities is a new Transformers movie, which is expected to become the eighth live action installment in the series.

According to Deadline, Paramount has brought Steven Spielberg on board to oversee the creative direction of the upcoming film. He will work alongside longtime Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Spielberg has already read the latest script written by Jason Fuchs.

Michael Bay is also being considered for a return. The director, who helmed the first five Transformers movies, is currently in early talks to direct the new installment. According to Deadline, Bay agreed to return after reading the script and meeting with Spielberg earlier this week.

Spielberg, Bay and di Bonaventura were all instrumental in launching the Transformers franchise. Spielberg originally selected Bay to direct the first movie and served as an executive producer on the first two installments.

Bay stepped away from the franchise following 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight. The series later continued with Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but neither film matched the success of the earlier installments.

Plot details for the new movie are being kept under wraps. The only known detail is that the story will take place in the modern day. No cast members have been announced yet, as the project remains in the early stages of development.
