Microsoft is testing a revamped version of its Xbox PC app, codenamed Garrison. The new launcher is designed to deliver better performance, smoother navigation, and an interface that more closely resembles the Xbox Series X|S console experience.
Its design builds on work done for Xbox Cloud Gaming's interface, which was developed under the codename Bastion. One of the biggest changes is the merger of the separate game library and store pages into a single interface, making it easier to browse and find games.
According to Windows Central's early impressions, performance is the most noticeable improvement. The redesigned app loads game libraries much faster, including collections containing more than 1,400 Xbox titles. It also makes it easier to distinguish between games that can be installed locally and those available exclusively through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The interface supports both mouse and keyboard controls and gamepads. Users will also be able to set the app as the default home screen for Windows 11's new Game Mode. When enabled, it automatically switches to a controller-friendly layout, making it particularly suitable for handheld devices such as the Xbox Ally.
For now, Microsoft appears to be prioritizing speed and usability rather than introducing a wide range of new features. However, it remains to be seen whether the company will improve the Xbox PC Store's community features, developer communication tools, and review visibility to better compete with Steam.
Windows Central suggests that the redesigned app could reach Xbox Insiders on PC within the coming weeks. The updated interface is already being bundled into Windows 11 builds, potentially indicating that a public testing phase is approaching.
