NBA 2K27 Details Announced: Victor Wembanyama Featured on the Cover

2K Games and Visual Concepts have officially unveiled the first details of the basketball simulator NBA 2K27. The game's official release will take place on September 4, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC, with owners of expanded editions getting early access starting August 28.

Victor Wembanyama's selection is historic for the franchise—he becomes the first San Antonio Spurs player to grace a global cover of NBA 2K (previously, Tony Parker and Pau Gasol appeared only on regional covers). The Frenchman had a stellar season, becoming the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) in history and leading the Spurs to the NBA Finals, cementing his status as the new face of the league following the LeBron James and Stephen Curry era.

Officially, 2K did not reveal a shortlist of candidates, leaving all other names as speculation among fans and media. Jalen Brunson was mentioned most frequently as an alternative option; following a championship season, many fans believed he deserved the cover spot. After the announcement, social media was flooded with posts arguing that the Finals MVP or the leader of the championship team should have received the honor. Fans also frequently brought up Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, three-time MVP Nikola Jokić, and Luka Dončić.

According to Reddit insiders, the decision regarding the main cover was finalized prior to the start of the NBA Finals, meaning an outstanding performance by anyone in the final series could no longer alter the company's choice. Fan reactions were split: the majority supported Wembanyama as the "future of the NBA," while a portion of the community remains convinced that, based on the full season's results, Brunson was more deserving of the cover.
