Nintendo has launched a major GitHub takedown campaign targeting projects connected to Nintendo Switch emulation. More than 400 repositories have reportedly been removed, including forks and copies of Yuzu as well as projects such as Suyu and Skyline.
According to reports from industry outlets, Nintendo's lawyers filed seven separate DMCA complaints as part of a coordinated campaign. In total, 401 repositories were taken down. Suyu was the main target, accounting for 311 removed repositories. Another 29 repositories were reportedly connected to Skyline, an Android based Switch emulator, while 17 belonged to MonoNX, a Nintendo Switch emulator written in C#.
Nintendo claims that these projects bypass the encryption protecting its games by using unauthorized copies of cryptographic keys.
«During operation, the emulators at the reported repositories necessarily use unauthorized copies of these cryptographic keys to decrypt unauthorized copies of Nintendo Switch games, or ROMs, at or immediately before runtime without Nintendo's authorization», — reads the notice.
Completely eliminating Switch emulation is unlikely to be an easy task for Nintendo. Once an emulator is taken down, developers can use its publicly available source code to create new forks and continue development. This has already happened with both Yuzu and Skyline.
In 2024, Tropic Haze, the company behind Yuzu, agreed to a $2.4 million settlement with Nintendo and shut down development of the emulator.
