Nintendo has officially confirmed that Mario Kart Tour is approaching the end of its journey. The mobile racing game will permanently shut down on September 30, after which its online servers will go offline and the title will no longer be playable. The company also confirmed that it has no plans to release an offline version or a replacement for the game.
The announcement was widely expected since Nintendo stopped releasing new content for Mario Kart Tour back in 2023. Although updates ended, the game remained fully playable with online functionality until now.
As part of the shutdown process, Nintendo has already begun discontinuing premium features. Ruby purchases have ended, though players can continue spending any remaining Rubies before the servers close. New Gold Pass subscriptions and automatic renewals have also been disabled. Players with an active subscription will continue receiving most Gold Pass benefits until the game's final day, while non subscribers will gain access to most of those benefits starting with the Vacation Tour on August 4.
Nintendo also confirmed that players with unused paid Rubies will be able to request refunds once the service officially ends. However, free Rubies and paid currency that has already been spent will not qualify. More details about refunds and account handling will be shared closer to the shutdown date.
Unlike Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which later received an offline successor called Pocket Camp Complete, Mario Kart Tour will not receive a similar standalone edition. Once the servers are switched off, the game will no longer be accessible.
Mario Kart Tour launched for iOS and Android in 2019 and was developed by DeNA. The game originally featured a single player experience before expanding with rotating Tours, collectible characters, karts, gliders, and tracks inspired by both real world cities and classic Mario Kart locations. Shortly after release, Nintendo announced that the game had surpassed 90 million downloads.
The closure of Mario Kart Tour is another reminder of the growing number of live service and mobile games reaching the end of their lifespan. While the title enjoyed a much longer run than many games in the genre, longtime players will soon lose access to years of progress, collections, and memories. Anyone who has not yet experienced Nintendo's mobile racer has only a limited amount of time left to do so.
