According to a VideoCardz source, NVIDIA has already delivered finished physical samples of the GeForce RTX 50 SUPER series graphics cards to at least one of its AIB partners. The presence of ready devices indicates that development is complete and past the prototype stage. However, the California tech giant has officially notified manufacturers that the release is on hold, without providing a new launch timeline.
The project freeze is attributed to the excessive cost of the new 3GB GDDR7 memory chips. Unlike standard 2GB chips priced at around $20, the new 3GB modules are estimated at $60–$70 per unit. A threefold price increase for a 50% capacity boost drives up the manufacturing cost of a single graphics card's memory subsystem by several hundred dollars.
Transitioning to 3GB chips is a key feature of the refresh, as it allows for a significant VRAM increase without widening the memory bus or altering the PCB layout. As a result, launch decisions are currently pending for the following models:
- GeForce RTX 5080 SUPER
- GeForce RTX 5070 Ti SUPER
- GeForce RTX 5070 SUPER
- GeForce RTX 5050 (9 GB)
