PGL introduces a $30,000 fine for teams withdrawing from tournaments in 2027

Romanian tournament operator PGL has updated its rulebook for 2027, introducing strict sanctions for teams that withdraw from events after confirming their participation. The main addition is a fixed financial fine of $30,000.

The issue of frequent withdrawals has escalated against the backdrop of the Valve Regional Standings (VRS) system. Teams began signing up for tournaments and withdrawing from them based solely on their need for ranking points, especially during the intense push to qualify for Major tournaments.

PGL CEO Silviu Stroie briefly explained the rule update: "This is done to create a more professional scene."

According to the updated rulebook, any roster that withdraws from a PGL event, regardless of the timing or circumstances, automatically loses the right to the next Direct VRS Invite. In addition to paying the fixed $30,000 fine, the organization of such a team is also obliged to:

The aforementioned fines and reimbursements do not apply only in the presence of official documentation confirming a medical emergency or a visa refusal for reasons beyond the team's control (such exceptions do not include late or incomplete visa applications).

It is expected that the financial penalties will fully come into effect starting with PGL's fifth event of 2027, scheduled for September 4-12. This is due to the regulatory requirement to publish additional tournament information ten months prior to an event. At the same time, the rule regarding the revocation of future invites for withdrawing teams is already active and can be applied during the first four PGL tournaments next year.
