Sandfall Interactive receive France’s Order of Arts and Letters

French studio Sandfall Interactive, best known for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has been awarded the Order of Arts and Letters by France’s Ministry of Culture. The distinction recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through artistic or literary creation or have contributed to the influence of arts and culture in France and worldwide.

УThe studio shared the news on LinkedIn, writing:

«From Expeditioners to Knights! We were received yesterday at the Ministry of Culture to celebrate our game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. As such, the members of Sandfall Interactive were awarded the Order of Arts and Letters. This distinction honors us, and our deepest thanks go especially to our team who shaped this world and to the millions of players who have brought it to life. We hope that our journey will inspire all those who wish to take the plunge and create their own work.».

The Order of Arts and Letters was officially established in 1957, though its origins trace back to earlier French honors dating as far as the 15th century. According to the Ministry of Culture, it evolved from earlier civil merit awards that recognized artists, architects, collectors, and writers.

The recognition stands out against the backdrop of recent comments by French President Emmanuel Macron, who previously stated he was open to restricting access to videogames for children under 15. At the same time, Macron has publicly praised Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on two occasions, calling it «a shining example of French audacity and creativity» and «a source of great pride for Montpellier and for France».

French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati also highlighted the game’s importance, stating:

«Through its scale and the enthusiasm it has generated from both the public and critics, this game establishes itself as a major milestone. By honouring its team, the Republic affirms: videogames are a major art form and an essential industry.».

Sandfall Interactive now joins a notable list of past recipients of the Order of Arts and Letters, which includes Michel Ancel, Peter Molyneux, and Shigeru Miyamoto.

As a reminder, EWC has published details of the Fortnite Reload Elite Series.
