New details have surfaced online about Project Canis, a handheld console from Sony that, unlike the PlayStation Portal, is being designed for native game execution. The device is expected to launch alongside the PlayStation 6 as part of a unified ecosystem.
According to well-known tech insider KeplerL2, Project Canis is capable of outperforming not only the Nintendo Switch 2 but also the home console Xbox Series S in standard graphics processing. While the latter is already considered relatively weak and outdated, achieving this level of performance in a handheld device would be a major breakthrough.
The console is also said to handle ray tracing significantly better than the Xbox Series S. Sony’s PSSR upscaling technology, expected to reach its third version by launch, should deliver sharper visuals at high performance compared to the NVIDIA DLSS «Light» solution used in the Nintendo Switch 2.
Previous leaks suggest that the handheld version of PlayStation 6 Portable, which Project Canis may ultimately be named, will feature a processor with four Zen 6c cores and two energy-efficient Zen 6 LP cores, RDNA 5 graphics with 16 compute units, 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory on a 192-bit bus, and a 3 nm TSMC chip with an approximate die size of 135 mm².
The PlayStation 6 and Project Canis are currently expected to launch in late 2027, although analysts note the possibility of delays due to ongoing issues in the memory and components market.
