Sony has announced that it will completely discontinue the production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. The announcement was published on the official PlayStation Blog.
According to Sony, the decision reflects the natural shift in consumer preferences and broader entertainment industry trends, where demand for digital media has significantly surpassed that of physical formats. After the transition date, all new PlayStation game releases will be available exclusively in digital form. The change will not affect games that have already launched or are scheduled to be released on disc before January 2028.
The announcement comes amid preparations for Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 6. The move away from physical media suggests that, if the PS6 launches in 2028, it may not include a disc drive by default. Previous reports had suggested the console would at least offer a detachable disc drive, similar to the current PlayStation 5 revision.
As previously reported, Night School Studio released the interactive horror game Unhinged on Netflix.
