Lucasfilm is considering Jon Watts to direct the first movie in a new Star Wars trilogy written by Simon Kinberg. The report comes from Knight Edge Media and has since been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Earlier, it was reported that a director had already been found for Kinberg's new trilogy, although the name was not revealed. Now, two sources claim that Lucasfilm is considering Jon Watts, known for directing the Tom Holland Spider Man trilogy and working on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. For now, Watts is reportedly attached only to the first movie, though that could change later.
According to the reports, the film would continue the saga after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and could become Episode X. Daisy Ridley is also expected to return as Jedi Master Rey. Her previously announced Star Wars: New Jedi Order movie had been in development for some time but was reportedly put aside in favor of this project. Rey is expected to have a smaller role that could potentially expand in later installments.
It remains unknown whether John Boyega and Oscar Isaac will return as Finn and Poe Dameron. Lucasfilm is also reportedly casting new, relatively unknown male and female leads.
If everything moves forward as planned, production could begin as early as next year. However, the project has not yet been officially greenlit by Disney and currently has no release date.
