Star Citizen has raised over $1 billion in crowdfunding amid plans for a 2026 release

The space MMO Star Citizen from Cloud Imperium Games has officially surpassed $1 billion in total community funding. The milestone comes more than ten years after the project was first announced in 2012.

The game’s journey began with a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $2 million. After that, the developers continued with ongoing crowdfunding. Despite its financial success, the release timeline has shifted significantly: a launch originally planned for 2014 was repeatedly delayed, and nearly 12 years later the game still does not have a firm release date. The team is currently aiming for a possible release in 2026.

In an interview, creator and game designer Chris Roberts emphasized that fan support has been crucial in keeping the project moving forward. He noted that major publishers or private investors would not have provided the same level of creative freedom and patience required for their development process. Roberts compared the long-term vision of Star Citizen to the enduring success of World of Warcraft, which has maintained active communities for over twenty years.
