Opening the locked door inside the Tadpole Pens facility in Subnautica 2 requires a special access code. However, the code isn't found within the base itself. Instead, players must explore a deep cave system hidden beneath the ocean floor. Taking a Tadpole vehicle along with a few Air Bladders is highly recommended, as both can make the journey significantly safer.
Fast Route Overview:
- Begin at the Tadpole Pens entrance
- Travel southwest while following the seabed
- Roughly 540 meters from the Lifepod, locate an opening in the ocean floor and enter it
- Continue through the cave network until you reach around 236 meters in depth
- At approximately 475 meters from the Lifepod, pass through the next opening
- Descend to a supply crate resting at 310 meters
- Examine the object on top of the crate to receive the access code
Where to Find the Tadpole Pens Code
The code is hidden deep underground at a depth of 310 meters, not far from the route leading away from Tadpole Pens. Although reaching the area without a vehicle is possible, using a Tadpole for most of the trip is strongly advised.
Because the vehicle's standard depth limit is 250 meters, you'll eventually need to leave it behind and finish the descent on your own. Even so, having the vehicle for the majority of the route greatly reduces risk and makes navigation easier.
Players who progress further in the story will eventually receive a waypoint from NOA connected to Zip's black box. This marker points toward the same general area, making it a useful guide if you prefer to wait before searching for the code.
Reaching the Cave
Leave Tadpole Pens and head southwest while staying close to the seafloor. After a short distance, you'll encounter a large drop-off with several openings leading underground.
If your Lifepod beacon is active, the entrance should appear about 540 meters away. Enter the cavern and continue moving downward through the tunnel system.
As you descend, aim for a depth of roughly 240 meters. Around 475 meters from the Lifepod, you'll discover a passage where the Tadpole can no longer continue safely, forcing you to proceed without it.
Retrieving the Access Code
Beyond this point, you'll come across two black containers and another route leading deeper underground. Follow the path until you reach a supply crate positioned at 310 meters.
The object placed on top of the crate contains the access code needed to unlock Tadpole Pens. Interact with it to add the code to your database.
The final section can be challenging if you haven't crafted a Rebreather, as oxygen consumption becomes a major concern. Carrying Air Bladders can provide additional breathing time and make the return trip much less stressful.
Unlocking the Facility
After collecting the code, return to Tadpole Pens and use the nearby control panel to open the sealed door.
Inside, you'll find several useful items available for scanning, including the Repair Tool blueprint. Players who haven't unlocked it yet should make scanning it a priority.
The room also contains a ladder leading to a chamber with NOA. Speaking with the AI and progressing through its dialogue options will unlock a new objective and reveal another point of interest for future exploration.
