Rebel Wolves’ new RPG, created by a studio founded by former The Witcher 3 developers, has received generally positive reviews from critics. The Blood of Dawnwalker currently holds scores of 84 on OpenCritic and 85 on Metacritic.
Reviewers have praised the game’s dark story, atmospheric world, meaningful choices, and unusual day and night system. The protagonist Coen fights with a sword during the day, while nighttime gives him access to powerful vampire abilities. Since players have a limited amount of time to save his family, deciding how to spend each day becomes a major part of the experience.
However, the game has also attracted criticism. Some reviewers found the combat lacking in depth, while repetitive enemy movesets can make encounters feel predictable. Critics have also pointed to dated facial, movement, and combat animations, an open world that can sometimes feel underdeveloped, bugs, asset loading issues, and performance drops. Some reviewers also believe that the quest structure quickly becomes predictable.
- IGN — 9/10. The outlet called The Blood of Dawnwalker its new favorite vampire game and one of the best story-driven RPGs in recent years. The day/night cycle, choices, story, and characters were particularly praised.
- GameSpot — 8/10. The reviewer praised the large number of well-written quests and the freedom of choice. The fact that you cannot complete every quest because of the time limit makes the experience even more compelling.
- Polygon — No score. The reviewer praised the freedom of action, the different ways to approach objectives, and the impact of choices on the story. The game managed to win them over within the first hour.
- GamesRadar+ — No score. The concept was described as ambitious, but the outlet criticized the overly simple activities, quests, and predictable RPG structure.
- PCGamesN — 9/10. The reviewer highly praised the time limit system and the consequences of the player's decisions. The outlet called it one of its favorite games in quite some time.
- Eurogamer — 8/10. The outlet praised Rebel Wolves’ unconventional approach to the RPG genre, the game’s structure, and Coen’s dual nature. The Blood of Dawnwalker was described as a strong debut for the studio.
- VGC — No score. The game was praised for avoiding unnecessary content and filler, but its technical performance was criticized due to an unstable frame rate and bugs.
- Game Informer — 7/10. The reviewer praised the grim world and atmosphere, but criticized the combat system and the repetitive nature of encounters.
- Game Rant — 6/10. The outlet highlighted the game’s interesting ideas, characters, story, and time limit system. However, it believes that repetition, inconsistency, and technical issues prevent the game from reaching its full potential.
The Blood of Dawnwalker launches on September 3 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
