In the center of Buenos Aires stands one of the country’s most famous landmarks — the Obelisk of Buenos Aires. Built in 1936 to mark the 400th anniversary of the city’s founding, it has long become not only an architectural symbol but also a kind of “screen of the nation’s mood” for Argentina.
Recently, the obelisk was used to celebrate the achievements of the local esports organization 9z Team. This marked their qualification for the IEM Cologne Major 2026 and their participation in the Esports World Cup 2026. It’s a telling moment: esports in the country has reached a level where it is celebrated alongside major national events.
As an additional fact, it is worth noting that on August 24, 2023, for Ukraine’s Independence Day, the Obelisk of Buenos Aires was illuminated in blue and yellow. This was a gesture of support and solidarity with Ukraine during the war.
Also, near this obelisk, Argentinians celebrated their national team’s victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
