In the early and mid-2000s many developers were trying to create their own version of the success achieved by Grand Theft Auto III. Most of those projects faded away quickly, but one notable exception was The Simpsons: Hit & Run.
Despite lacking heavy crime themes, firearms or a dramatic storyline, the game gradually gained cult status. For years fans have been asking for a modern remaster.
Recently there has been renewed hope. The Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman suggested that such a revival is not impossible. Speaking to People, Selman explained that a remastered version of the game could happen if interest from fans remains strong. However, he also noted that several legal and corporate challenges still stand in the way.
«Nothing is set in stone. But my quote about Hit & Run would be: «Never say never». Because we know people love it. We know they want it, so that's good. If we know people want it, never say never»
Selman also reflected on working on the game back in 2003 and admitted that he never expected it to become such a beloved title.
«I had no idea it would become a cult game, a cult success»
According to him, the team originally wanted the game to capture the spirit of Grand Theft Auto III, which is why the ability to enter and exit vehicles became a key gameplay feature.
«This has to be The Simpsons version of that. You have to be able to get in and out of the cars»
The original title was developed by Radical Entertainment, the studio also known for the Prototype series. After years of inactivity, several veterans of the team reunited in early 2026 under the name New Radical Games and stated they are open to working on remasters and ports of classic games.
If the rights holders, including The Walt Disney Company and Fox, decide to move forward with the project, this newly formed studio could potentially take on the revival of the cult classic.
As a Reminder, Arc Raiders replaces some AI voice lines with real actors.
