Belgian national team goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila have invested in Fusion Esports Group, the parent company of Danish esports organization Astralis. The deal was finalized through their joint investment group, NXTPLAY. The financial terms of the investment, including the amount and the stake acquired, have not been disclosed.
This marks NXTPLAY's first venture into the esports industry, as the group previously invested exclusively in traditional sports—specifically French football club Le Mans FC, Spanish club CD Extremadura, and Belgian club KRC Genk. Fusion Esports Group management noted that the investors' background in the sports business, combined with their genuine interest in gaming culture, will be a valuable asset for the organization's growth.
Courtois mentioned that he has been following Astralis for some time and saw a natural opportunity to get involved in Fusion's ambitious projects surrounding gaming communities.
This investment agreement comes alongside a series of recent personnel and structural shifts at Astralis. Around a month ago, the Danish esports organization appointed Morten Bro as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). Earlier, when Fusion Group first acquired Astralis about a year ago, Julian Miculcy was appointed Vice President to lead the brand's revival process.
As a reminder, Team Vitality Co-CEO Vas Roberts stepped down from his position after 20 months on the job.
