VGC has partially corroborated a recent report from MP1st about a new Uncharted game. According to the outlet, Uncharted 5 is currently in development and is expected to be Naughty Dog’s next release after Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which is not expected to launch before 2027.
MP1st reports that the project is being directed by Shaun Escayg, the director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Escayg previously left Naughty Dog to lead development of Marvel’s Avengers at Crystal Dynamics.
The story details remain unconfirmed. However, the ending of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End leaves room for the series to continue through Cassie Drake, the daughter of Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher. At the end of the game, Cassie discovers relics from her parents’ past adventures, prompting Nathan to decide to tell her about them.
According to MP1st, Nathan Drake will appear in the new game, although the outlet has not been able to confirm his exact role. He could remain the protagonist, become a supporting character, or simply make a cameo. The report suggesting that Cassie will be the main protagonist remains unconfirmed.
Naughty Dog has not released a new mainline Uncharted game since 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The studio followed it with the standalone expansion Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in 2017. Since then, the franchise has largely remained dormant apart from the release of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection for PS5 and PC.
In 2023, Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann said that the studio had “moved on” from the Uncharted franchise.
«For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games — and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on».
However, the following year, Naughty Dog recruiter Christina-Marie Drake McBrearty appeared to hint at a future for the franchise. After announcing that she had joined the studio, she described it as special “to be building future teams for not only new titles but for the legacy of Uncharted”.
Naughty Dog developed Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
