The Japanese anime industry has suffered a major loss. Yuji Yanase, a director and animator with more than 30 years of experience, has died at the age of 59. His death was announced on September 2 by the studios and production committees behind the anime he worked on. Yanase passed away on August 22, 2026, from acute myocardial infarction.
Yanase’s career spanned more than three decades, during which he worked at various stages of Japanese animation production. His name can be found in the credits of many well-known projects, and not always in the role of director — he worked on key animation, animation direction, storyboards, episode direction and other production duties.
Among the most notable works he contributed to was the cult classic Akira, as well as Death Note. His professional career also included popular series such as Hellsing, Chobits, Macross 7, Aria the Animation, Symphogear and Saint Seiya Omega.
Yanase also worked on major franchises such as Naruto and Pokémon. His career demonstrates the scale of his contribution to Japanese animation: for decades, he remained part of teams creating anime watched by millions of people around the world.
Yanase’s directing career included numerous television anime and productions, with his credits spanning projects such as Himegoto, In Another World With My Smartphone, If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord, By the Grace of the Gods, In the Land of Leadale, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1 and I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History.
In the later years of his career, Yanase became closely associated with MAHO FILM, where he joined as an employee in 2023. He continued to actively work on anime projects until the final months of his life.
In the summer 2026 season, Yanase was directing two television anime — The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker and The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne. Both series were still airing when news of his death was announced.
News of the director’s death was announced on September 2. MAHO FILM confirmed that Yanase died on August 22 at the age of 59. His family later revealed that the cause was acute myocardial infarction, while his funeral was held privately with close relatives in accordance with the family’s wishes.
Yanase’s wife said that his death was completely unexpected for the family. In a message shared through his X account, she wrote that it was still difficult for the family to fully comprehend the loss and that he himself would probably have been the most surprised by what had happened.
The production committees of the anime he worked on also expressed their condolences. The team behind The World’s Strongest Rearguard highlighted Yanase’s passion and warm personality, noting how he led the production team and made a significant contribution to the series.
