Watch Dogs remains an important franchise for Ubisoft, but the company is not currently developing a new game in the series. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that the franchise remains an “important brand for the future” of the company, although it has not yet been assigned to any of Ubisoft’s Creative Houses.
Guillemot also suggested that Watch Dogs could eventually return in the form of a remake, although Ubisoft has not announced any specific project or release plans.
The latest main entry in the series is Watch Dogs: Legion, which launched in 2020. One of its key features was the ability to play as almost any NPC in London. Despite its ambitious concept, the game received a mixed response and failed to match the success of Watch Dogs 2.
The original Watch Dogs debuted in 2014 and was positioned by Ubisoft as a competitor to Grand Theft Auto 5. Despite criticism over some of the differences between the game and its initial promises, it established a new open world franchise focused on crime and technology. Watch Dogs 2 followed in 2016, moving the action to San Francisco and receiving a much warmer reception.
There may also be something new coming for Watch Dogs: Legion. According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is reportedly preparing a Director’s Cut of the game featuring additional content. The release is allegedly planned for the first half of 2027, although Ubisoft has yet to officially confirm the project.
The future of the Watch Dogs movie also remains unclear. Filming wrapped up two years ago, while additional shooting took place last year. Ubisoft has yet to announce a release date or launch a full marketing campaign for the film.
For now, Watch Dogs remains part of Ubisoft’s long term plans, but a completely new game is not currently in development. The franchise could potentially return through a remake or other project in the future.
As a Reminder, Ninja Theory faces major layoffs amid growing uncertainty over the studio’s future.
