Despite Steam's ongoing efforts to improve user security, attackers continue to find ways to exploit the platform. The FBI has announced the arrest of 21 year old Florida resident Zyaire Dontaevious Zamarion Wilkins, who is accused of running a cryptocurrency theft operation through video games. Investigators say he embedded malware into eight different titles, allowing the group to steal digital assets worth around $220,000.
According to the investigation, Wilkins and several accomplices spent two years distributing trojans that were installed alongside the games. Once on a victim's PC, the malware searched for cryptocurrency wallet keys. The group also relied on social media campaigns and automated bots to promote the infected games and attract potential victims.
The FBI was able to identify the suspects after they attempted to use stolen Bitcoin to purchase gift cards that could be redeemed through Uber Eats.
Among the dangerous titles identified by the FBI are Lunara, PirateFi, BlockBlasters, and Lampy. While the agency's statement does not explicitly mention Steam, all eight infected games were distributed exclusively through the platform before being removed in early 2026.
