Exodus is being hailed as one of the most promising successors to Mass Effect

Journalists attending Gamescom 2026 got their first chance to spend around an hour with Exodus, the new sci-fi action RPG from Archetype Entertainment. The studio was founded by BioWare veterans, making comparisons to Mass Effect inevitable. However, early impressions suggest the game is not simply copying the familiar formula, but is trying to build on it with ideas of its own.

GamesRadar praised Exodus for stepping out of Mass Effect’s shadow with combat that expands on BioWare’s RPG foundations and a galaxy that feels worth exploring. The outlet was particularly impressed by orbital station exploration, companion interactions, and the combination of firearms with unusual abilities tied to ancient technology.

The game reportedly feels like a more grounded Mass Effect: Andromeda, blending the strengths of Mass Effect 2 and 3 with modern ability management. Companions are not just sources of bonuses, but active participants in combat who can create impressive ability synergies.

Combat also stands out for its fast pace. Players can make use of a grappling hook, slides, and stealth suits, adding verticality and variety to firefights. Among the companions, journalists were especially taken with Salt the Octo, an intelligent octopus in an exoskeleton who has already become a press favorite. One of the main characters is portrayed by renowned actor Matthew McConaughey.

Critics also highlighted the game’s darker atmosphere and distinctive setting. The Travelers explore uncharted star systems, encounter unfamiliar lifeforms, and cannot always expect a friendly reception. As a result, their adventures feel less predictable than the journeys of Commander Shepard and his crew.

One of Exodus’s most unusual mechanics is its uneven passage of time. Traveling at near-light speeds can mean only days or weeks pass for the protagonist, while decades elapse on planets and colonies. Returning to familiar locations may reveal older allies, transformed cities, new political regimes, or entire civilizations that developed without the player. This means decisions affect not only the plot, but also the course of history across generations.

Journalists are nevertheless urging caution. The demo lasted only about an hour, so the depth of the RPG systems and the consequences of player choices remain difficult to judge. Even so, the overall reaction has been highly positive, with Exodus already being described as one of the most promising sci-fi RPGs in years.

As IGN put it, “Exodus is just as ambitious as Mass Effect was in its time.” According to the journalists, the game has everything it takes to fill the void left in the space opera genre.

Exodus is scheduled to launch on April 7, 2027, for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
