ESL FACEIT Group has announced the first details for the IEM Cologne 2027 Counter-Strike tournament. For the first time in the event's prestigious history, the competition will take place on an innovative 360-degree stage.
The tournament will run from August 4 to 15. It will feature 24 of the world's elite teams competing for the championship trophy and a share of the $1,250,000 prize pool.
The organizers have changed the usual format: instead of ESL's traditional six-team playoffs for non-Major events, eight teams will play in the playoffs. The final stage will feature a single-elimination bracket and will span four days, from August 12 to 15.
This will be the event's first return to Cologne following the record-breaking IEM Cologne 2026 Major, which was the first Major in the city since ESL One Cologne 2016. Last year's tournament went down in history as the most-watched Counter-Strike event: it peaked at over 2.75 million concurrent viewers and generated over 100 million hours watched, breaking the long-standing record held by PGL Stockholm 2021.
Team Falcons triumphed at the 2026 Major in front of a sold-out crowd. The title was the first in Nikola "NiKo" Kovač's career, who admitted after the victory: "There was a lot of pain, but today it feels like it was all worth it." The victory was also a personal redemption for Finn "karrigan" Andersen, who was drafted into the Falcons roster after failing to qualify for the tournament with FaZe.
Marc Winther, Director of Esports Counter-Strike 2 at ESL FACEIT Group, emphasized that the success of the previous Major once again proved the unique atmosphere of Cologne. According to him, the combination of a four-day playoffs at the LANXESS arena and a 360-degree stage design provides an opportunity to deliver the most ambitious tournament yet while staying true to its historical significance.
