Japan Expansion Strategy: Team Vitality CEO Fabien Devide Outlines Club Plans

Fabien "neo" Devide, CEO of the French esports organization Team Vitality, outlined the club's approach to expanding into the Japanese market in an interview with Nikkei xTREND. The organization plans to act gradually, focusing on learning local specifics and partnering with local clubs.

Japan remains a difficult region for Western organizations due to high competition from local clubs with an established fan base. Furthermore, the country lacks the large-scale public events common in Western team marketing. Because of this, Team Vitality's primary hubs in the Asia-Pacific region currently remain China and Singapore.

Despite this, the organization has already taken its first test steps: launching official social media accounts in Japanese and signing local fighting game player Shoji "Fenritti" Sho.

Devide emphasized that Vitality does not intend to impose its own ways of doing things. The organization's main goal in the initial phase is to respectfully learn the market and build partnerships with organizations already present in the region. Only after that will the club consider expanding its own infrastructure.

In the long term, Team Vitality's CEO aims to open a club office in Japan. Among the possible locations besides Tokyo, Devide personally prefers Osaka or Hiroshima.

Team Vitality is not the only Western club attempting to establish a foothold in Japan. Other organizations are utilizing their own strategies:

Entering the Japanese market for Team Vitality is not an attempt to quickly capture new territory, but rather a long-term effort toward adapting to the local scene. The organization understands that the Japanese audience already has strong local brands, which is why it relies on partnerships and the gradual development of its own presence.

The experience of G2 Esports and Team Liquid shows that there is no universal formula for success here. Each club searches for its own way to get closer to the local audience.

Vitality is currently taking only its first steps, but the potential opening of an office in Japan will serve as an important signal. The main priority for the club is not merely entering a new market, but truly becoming a part of it.
